Be Careful What You Look For—Odds Are, You’ll Find It.
Sep 11, 2025
One of the more controversial studies that highlights this truth is the Rosenhan Experiment, conducted in 1973 by a Stanford University psychologist. Here’s a short synopsis of his study: a group of eight perfectly mentally healthy individuals checked themselves into psychiatric hospitals, claiming they had a disorder. Once admitted, they behaved normally, giving staff every opportunity to see they were healthy. But here’s the shocking part: most were never “discovered.” They had to eventually reveal it was an experiment just to get released.
The conclusion? Once someone is labeled in a certain way, our minds do everything possible to validate that label. We fill in the gaps to make our beliefs true—and we ignore evidence that doesn’t fit.
This phenomenon doesn’t just apply to doctors in a study. It shows up in everyday life. Consider another experiment where a substitute summer school teacher was told one group of students were advanced, while the other group were marginal students. The groups were switched. By the end of the end of the summer session, her feedback matched exactly what she was told. She “saw” what she expected to see.
Now, pause and apply this to yourself.
If you see yourself as lacking—whether in relationships, money, intelligence, or worth—that’s what you’ll notice. And your brain will create a world that proves it to you. On the flip side, if you begin each day telling yourself you are worthy, capable, and surrounded by opportunities, you will find evidence of exactly that.
Your reality isn’t simply shaped by what’s in front of you—it’s shaped by what you believe is in front of you. And that can change in an instant.
A Challenge for You
Tomorrow morning, before you start your day, decide who you are. Decide what you’re worthy of. Tell yourself:
- I am open to abundance in all areas of life.
- I only see opportunities that are meant for me.
- I am worthy of all of the good fortune that comes my way.
Then, watch how your reality begins to shift.
Because what you look for… you will find.
